In March 2010, President Obama signed comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), into law. The law makes preventive care—including family planning and related services—more accessible and affordable for many Americans. While some provisions of the law have already taken effect, many more provisions will be implemented in the coming years. On October 1, 2013, open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace begins for coverage starting as early as January 2014.
Below are a few staff pointers:
ObamaCare is the unofficial name for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. For Consistency, HPL will refer to this program as the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The Application will become available electronically and on paper beginning October 1, 2013 in English and Spanish.
We should only assist with access to computers, official website www.HealthCare.gov, and forms.
We should not be giving advice on benefit options or assisting with typing applications/questionnaires.
We should never handle customer confidential information such as insurance information, bank account information, ssn#, etc.
There is Live Chat available on www.HealthCare.gov (Go to bottom of website, select Help Center, Click Live Chat box)
There will be 2 Navigators assigned in Texas that will assist the public with completing the application (Similar to how AARP was assigned to branches during tax time). The Navigators have not yet been selected. Starting in September, the public can find Navigators and others who can assist through the Call Center or on HealthCare.gov
Please refer to the handout given to you, visit ACA FAQ, Affordable Care Act Resources, and www.HealthCare.gov for more detail information. The HPL Staff Training Portal lists additional resources that relate to health care and ACA but our priority is to direct the public to www.HealthCare.gov
