Books Alive! Summer Strikes Back, 3rd Annual Children's Book Celebration

Last Saturday May 5, 2012 was the Books Alive! Summer Strikes Back, 3rd Annual Children's Book Celebration at Central Library. Montrose staff was proud to have helped in creating and putting up origami butterflies, cranes, and flowers, as well as volunteering on the day of the event!

Central Library's fourth floor was transformed into something spectacular: Origami butterflies and cranes lined the walls and celing on the children's side of the fourth floor, and orgiami Darth Vader and Yoda pieces were strung on the ceiling on the opposite side. Pictured above: the origami cherry blossom tree next to a pond with origami frogs and dragonflies, and the spooky swamp with dangling vines. The concourse level also was lined with large origami butterflies hanging from the ceiling and large origami tulips along the baseboards. There were also neat cut-out boards (of astronauts, a cowboy, a cowgirl, and Elvis) behind which kids could stand and take pictures.

The event was a day-long medley of exciting youth activities, including arts & crafts, performances by Mad Science of Houston, origami by Origami Houston, shows by Alliance Fencing Academy and Crocodile Encounter (with live reptiles!), and the highlight of the celebration was guest speaker Tom Angleberger, author of a number of books including The Strange Case of Origami Yoda and Darth Paper Strikes Back.

There were many hard working staff members from Central and Neighborhood Libraries who helped make this event a success.
